Recent “peace talks” in Moscow, led by Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have concluded without progress on the Ukraine crisis, sparking significant concern. World affairs editor Sam Kiley argues that this mission was inherently flawed, given Witkoff’s perceived admiration for Vladimir Putin and a history of siding with Russia.
Kiley suggests that Putin, adept at using chaos among his adversaries (a strategy known as the Gerasimov doctrine), has effectively manipulated the Trump administration. Despite five hours of discussions, the Kremlin bluntly stated no resolution was reached. The baffling aspect for many, especially NATO allies, is why the US is leading these negotiations when, as Kiley contends, Trump acts not as a neutral party but as an advocate for Russian interests.
Witkoff’s conduct has drawn sharp criticism. Described as “fawning like Gollum,” he reportedly takes no notes, uses Kremlin translators, and emerges praising Putin as a “great guy” – comments that deeply offend victims of Putin’s regime. This praise comes despite Putin being wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes.
Alarmingly, Witkoff has even been accused of coaching Putin’s foreign policy adviser on how to manipulate Trump. Western intelligence services reportedly view Witkoff as a liability, with some calling him “Dim Philby,” implying he’s unknowingly aiding Russian interests.
With Europe on high alert, mobilising troops and recognizing Russia as a clear and present danger, it’s worrying that Western security discussions are being handled by an envoy distrusted by his own intelligence services. Trump, seemingly influenced by Witkoff, has reportedly threatened to cut vital intelligence to Ukraine if they don’t concede to Russian demands – a move that directly benefits Russia.
Kiley concludes that Europe, which has a direct stake and is Ukraine’s primary source of aid, must take decisive action. It’s time for European leaders to sideline the US in these critical diplomatic efforts, ending the chaos Russia exploits and restoring the democratic West’s leadership in foreign policy.
