The Suitcase Scandal: Is the CM’s Chair for Sale?

A political firestorm has erupted following explosive comments from Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. She boldly claimed that to secure the Chief Minister’s position within the Congress party, one needs to “give a suitcase of Rs 500 crore.” Her remarks, made after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, suggest that genuine dedication to Punjab is secondary to financial might. “We always speak for Punjab,” she stated, “but do not have Rs 500 crore which we can give to sit in chief minister’s chair.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) quickly seized on these allegations, demanding answers from the Congress leadership. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi called it a “serious allegation,” accusing the Congress of being “neck deep in corruption” and claiming it’s not the first time such accusations have surfaced. He pointed to past allegations, including those in Margaret Alva’s book about seat auctions during Karnataka polls.

Other BJP leaders echoed the sentiment. Amit Malviya called for accountability from the Gandhis, noting similar concerns raised in states like Chhattisgarh and Telangana. Sunil Jakhar, now with the BJP, even claimed he heard a figure of “Rs 350 crore” for the CM’s chair, alleging the party is full of “dacoits.”

BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh slammed what he called the “politics of moneybags” within the Congress, suggesting a “moral collapse” and a “money-driven auction system” instead of democratic processes. He further highlighted deep-rooted infighting, arguing that the party is more focused on bargaining for power than addressing public issues. These serious claims have certainly put the Congress leadership squarely in the hot seat, demanding a clear explanation for the public.
