A convicted child killer, João Ferreira da Silva, met a brutal end just a day after his release from prison. The 46-year-old was ambushed and shot dead on a street in Sinop, Brazil, an attack vividly captured by security cameras.
Silva had spent 17 years behind bars, serving a sentence for the horrific 2005 murder of nine-year-old Bruno Aparecido dos Santos. He lured the boy, sexually abused him, killed him, and then buried his body. His arrest followed another attack on a child, leading to further imprisonment.
The initial crime sparked immense public outrage in Sinop, with hundreds attempting to storm the police station where Silva was held. Despite his notorious past, he had recently been granted a semi-open prison regime, allowing him daily release. Tragically, his freedom was short-lived.
CCTV footage shows two masked men confronting Silva outside a hotel, forcing him to raise his hands before escorting him away and shooting him. Police have opened an investigation into the incident.
For Bruno’s mother, Josiana da Silva, news of her son’s killer’s death brought a complex mix of emotions. “I ask God for forgiveness for being happy,” she stated, adding, “but I am happy that this man will not kill anyone else.” She felt that “Justice has been done, but for me it took too long.” While acknowledging her lingering pain for her son, who would now be 29, she found a grim sense of closure in knowing he could no longer harm another child.
