Trump Backs Blakeman for NY Governor as Stefanik Exits Race

The upcoming New York gubernatorial race just got a major shake-up! Former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed Bruce Blakeman, the Republican executive for Nassau County, in the bid for governor. This significant announcement follows quickly on the heels of Rep. Elise Stefanik, a long-time ally of Trump, suspending her own campaign for the state’s top office.

Stefanik, a prominent voice in the GOP, explained her decision by stating she aimed to avoid an “unnecessary and protracted Republican primary.” Her withdrawal effectively clears the path for other contenders, and Blakeman wasted no time formally announcing his candidacy just days prior. While Trump initially remained neutral when asked about both candidates, his decisive endorsement of Blakeman now sets a clear direction for the Republican field.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Blakeman, declaring, “Bruce is MAGA all the way, and has been with me from the very beginning.” This powerful backing is expected to give Blakeman a substantial boost, potentially solidifying his position as the leading Republican contender. If successful in the primary, he would likely face off against the incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the general election.

Blakeman is no stranger to public attention. As Nassau County executive, he has implemented policies such as banning transgender athletes from county sports facilities, establishing a volunteer law enforcement unit that critics have labeled a militia, and supporting federal immigration enforcement. These bold stances suggest a sharp ideological contrast with Governor Hochul.

The Hochul campaign swiftly reacted to the news, with communications director Sarafina Chitika stating, “Donald Trump endorsed Bruce Blakeman for one reason: he’ll put Trump first, New York last, and leave families to foot the bill.” As election season progresses, Trump’s endorsement has certainly ignited what promises to be an intense political battle in New York.
