The music world is mourning the loss of a true pioneer, Mick Abrahams, the founding guitarist of the iconic band Jethro Tull. Mick passed away on Friday, December 19, at the age of 82, following a courageous health battle spanning 15 years. The sad news was shared on Jethro Tull’s official website, accompanied by a heartfelt tribute from frontman Ian Anderson.

Mick Abrahams was an absolutely vital force in the early formation of Jethro Tull. He brought his powerful presence and blues-infused talent, helping to shape the band’s distinctive sound. Ian Anderson fondly remembered him as an “experienced, powerful and lyrical guitarist” and a strong vocalist who truly “commanded the stage.” Whether it was his iconic rendition of “Cat Squirrel” at the Marquee Club or supporting legendary bands like Cream, Mick’s talent shone brightly. His musical ideas were always evolving, leading to what Anderson called a “tour de force” display of instrumental skill throughout his performing days.

His influence extended beyond his time with the band. Martin Barre, who joined Jethro Tull after Mick’s departure, paid a touching tribute to his “friend and mentor.” Barre expressed his gratitude, saying, “He was so nice to me and that is something I will never forget. What a magnificent guitar player who gave us so much. Rest in peace.”

Though his later years were marked by worsening health that prevented him from performing or socializing, Mick Abrahams’ legacy as a pivotal figure in rock and blues-rock will forever resonate. His contributions to music were immense, and he will be deeply missed.
