North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is making headlines again, not just with military muscle-flexing but also with a glimpse into his future plans – and a potential successor. Recent state media reports show Kim observing the construction of an advanced submarine with his daughter, Ju Ae, who many analysts believe is being groomed for leadership.
This isn’t just any submarine; it’s an 8700-ton nuclear-powered vessel designed to launch surface-to-air missiles. Part of a major naval modernization effort, this submarine is reportedly near completion, with its hull design indicating a nuclear reactor onboard. Kim himself emphasized the urgency, declaring North Korea is building multiple such vessels and accelerating construction to equip them with various weapons. He stressed that developing nuclear capabilities and a modern navy is “essential and inevitable” in today’s “by no means peaceful” world.
Adding to the regional tensions, Kim also oversaw the test-firing of long-range surface-to-air missiles. These missiles successfully hit targets 200km away, demonstrating North Korea’s strategic technology for high-altitude defenses. South Korea confirmed the missile test, noting their military was ready.
Kim’s rhetoric is sharp. He criticized South Korea’s own nuclear submarine plans with Washington, calling it a threat to national security. He also condemned the recent arrival of a US nuclear-powered submarine in a South Korean port as an “act of escalating military tensions.” With his daughter by his side during these significant military unveilings, Kim Jong-un sends a clear message about both his nation’s defense ambitions and the future of his dynasty.
