A somber cloud hangs over the Indian community in Canada this week, following two heartbreaking deaths that have left many in shock. The latest incident involves Shivank Avasthi, a promising PhD student at the University of Toronto Scarborough, who was tragically shot and killed near his campus.
Shivank was found with a fatal gunshot wound near the Highland Creek Trail area, marking Toronto’s 41st homicide this year. The Consulate General of India in Toronto has expressed deep sorrow, working closely with Canadian police to investigate this devastating crime and offering full support to Shivank’s grieving family. The area around the university experienced a lockdown as police responded, and authorities are now appealing for any dashcam footage or information that could help them find those responsible.
Adding to the anguish, Shivank’s death comes just days after another tragic loss: Himanshi Khurana, a 30-year-old Indian citizen, was also found dead earlier this week. Investigators have attributed Khurana’s death to intimate partner violence, and a Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued for Abdul Ghafoori in connection with the case. The Consulate is also providing assistance to Khurana’s family for repatriation.
These back-to-back tragedies have intensified concerns about safety within the Indian diaspora and especially around university campuses in Toronto. As investigations continue into both cases, the community grapples with profound grief and a renewed call for vigilance and justice. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of Shivank Avasthi and Himanshi Khurana during this incredibly difficult time.
