US Strikes Venezuela: A Nation Divided?

Recent news from Washington has sent shockwaves, as a U.S. military strike in Venezuela led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro. But how do Americans feel about this bold move? A new Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals a complex and divided picture.

Overall, about one-third of Americans approve of the strike. However, a significant 72% express concern that the U.S. might become too deeply involved in the South American nation. This tension between action and apprehension is clearly visible across political lines.

Unsurprisingly, support for the operation heavily skews Republican, with 65% backing President Trump’s decision. In stark contrast, only 11% of Democrats and 23% of independents agree with the military action. The raid, which occurred before dawn in Caracas, saw Maduro handed over for prosecution on alleged drug trafficking charges.

President Trump’s rhetoric has been equally impactful, with statements like the U.S. would now “run” Venezuela and needs “total access” to its vast oil fields. This marks a sharp turn for a president who previously criticized foreign entanglements.

Republicans, in particular, show strong support for a more assertive foreign policy. The poll found 43% of Republicans believe the U.S. should “dominate affairs in the Western Hemisphere.” A majority also support sending U.S. troops to Venezuela (60%) and taking control of its oil fields (59%).

Yet, even among Republicans, there’s a degree of worry. About 54% are concerned about potential over-involvement, financial costs, and risks to military personnel. It’s clear that while the initial strike has a base of support, the path forward for U.S. policy in Venezuela remains a subject of widespread debate and concern.
