A deeply distressing incident has rocked Pakistan’s Sindh province, where a 23-year-old Hindu farmer, Kelash Kohli, was tragically shot dead. The alleged perpetrator? His own landlord, Sarfaraz Nizamani, reportedly over a dispute about Kelash building a small shelter on the land. This senseless act, which occurred on January 4th in Talhar village, has ignited a wave of outrage and widespread protests from the Hindu community.
The community’s powerful demand for justice led to swift action. Police swiftly formed a special team and, after a manhunt, successfully arrested landlord Sarfaraz Nizamani and his accomplice, Zafarullah Khan, in Hyderabad. Kelash had succumbed to his bullet wounds in the hospital, leaving his family and community heartbroken.
The protests, which saw hundreds gather for sit-ins in Badin, were a testament to the community’s resolve. Shiva Kaachi, who runs a welfare trust for Hindu minorities, highlighted how crucial public pressure was in ensuring the culprits were apprehended. The demonstrations only ceased after the Inspector General of Police Sindh personally contacted Kelash’s grieving father to confirm the arrests.
Now, as an FIR has been filed by Kelash’s brother, Poon Kumar Kohli, the hope is for a fair and transparent trial. This incident underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable communities and ensuring that justice is served, restoring confidence in the authorities and preventing such horrific crimes in the future.
