A devastating tragedy has shaken Russia, as authorities announce a criminal investigation into the deaths of nine newborn babies at a Siberian maternity hospital. The infants, mostly premature and battling severe infections passed from mother to baby, died over the country’s New Year holidays at Maternity Hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk.
The Investigative Committee has opened a case on charges of causing death by negligence, a serious accusation that points to potential systemic failures. Local health officials confirmed that out of 234 children born at the hospital between December 1st and January 11th, 17 were in critical condition, all suffering from severe infections. Tragically, nine of these vulnerable infants did not survive.
In response to the horrific events, the hospital’s head doctor, Vitaly Kheraskov, has been immediately suspended from his duties as the investigation unfolds. The sorrow extends beyond the affected families, reaching the highest levels of government. Valentina Matviyenko, speaker for Russia’s upper house of parliament, called the deaths an “irreparable loss” and a “tragedy for the state.” She emphasized the urgent need to learn “all of the right lessons” from this disaster, ensuring such a heartbreaking situation is never repeated. The nation watches closely as officials work to uncover the full truth behind these preventable deaths.
