Wolverhampton residents woke up to a shocking and alarming scene this morning as a massive factory fire erupted in the Blakenhall area. What’s been quickly dubbed a “major toxic incident” began around 7:30 am on Wednesday, January 17th, sending colossal plumes of thick smoke billowing high into the sky, visible from across the city.

The early morning peace was shattered by the ominous sound of sirens “coming from every direction” and reports of startling explosions. Locals quickly took to social media, sharing images of the incredible scale of the blaze on Sunbeam Street. Many residents, like Dave Bennett, reported struggling to breathe through the acrid smoke, emphasizing the immediate danger posed by the fire.

Emergency services were swift and formidable in their response. Eight fire engines, a 4×4 brigade response vehicle, and a hydraulic aerial platform raced to the scene, with firefighters from across the West Midlands working tirelessly. Equipped with breathing apparatus, crews are battling the intense inferno, which is believed to have originated in a factory building.

The potential hazards were immediately clear. St Lukes Primary School, situated near the factory, made the crucial decision to close its doors for the day, sending all pupils home to ensure their safety. Road closures are also in effect on Upper Villiers Street and Sunbeam Street, causing significant disruption and traffic diversions.

As the situation unfolds, West Midlands Fire Service and local authorities are issuing urgent advice: please avoid the area completely, and if you live or work nearby, keep all your windows and doors tightly shut. Public safety remains the absolute priority as these dedicated crews work relentlessly to contain what has become a very serious and widespread incident for the Wolverhampton community. Stay safe and stay informed.
