In a significant move, European Union foreign ministers have unanimously agreed on a fresh wave of sanctions against Iran. This decision comes in direct response to the brutal crackdown on widespread anti-government protests that have swept across the country, igniting global concern over human rights. Reports indicate a horrific toll, with estimates of protesters killed ranging from thousands, potentially up to 30,000, in a wave of violence against those demanding change.
The new measures target approximately 30 individuals and entities, including senior government officials, prosecutors, police leaders, and key members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These sanctions are designed to have real consequences, involving asset freezes and travel bans. As EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas stated ahead of the decision, “If you are suppressing people, it has a price and you will be also sanctioned for this.” The individuals targeted are those deemed responsible for internet shutdowns and the violent repression of citizens.
Beyond these tangible sanctions, there’s growing and now unanimous momentum within the EU to take an even stronger stance: officially designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization. This move, initially met with some resistance but now gaining full support, including from France, sends a powerful and unambiguous message. While the IRGC is already sanctioned by the EU for grave human rights violations, this “terrorist” label would significantly elevate the condemnation, signaling zero tolerance for their actions.
EU ministers emphasized that such “unbearable oppression” and “crimes committed” cannot go unanswered. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot underscored that “the extraordinary courage of the Iranian women and men… cannot be in vain.” German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul hailed the agreement as a “success for the people of Iran” and a testament to the EU’s commitment to its values. The EU is standing firm, seeking accountability for the violence and hoping to bring an end to impunity for those responsible.
