A profound sadness has swept through the junior hockey community following a devastating collision near Stavely, Alberta, earlier this month. The lives of three promising young players were tragically cut short in an accident involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle on Highway 2. RCMP are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, which occurred around 11 a.m. at a local intersection. While the semi driver sustained only minor injuries, all three occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving families and teammates reeling.
The victims have been identified as 18-year-old J.J. Wright of Kamloops, 18-year-old Cameron Casorso, also from Kamloops, and 17-year-old Caden Fine from Alabama. These young men were cherished members of the Southern Alberta Mustangs, heading to a team practice on February 2nd when tragedy struck. The team confirmed their immense loss in a heartfelt social media statement, expressing a grief that “no words can adequately express.”
The Mustangs organization is now rallying to support the families, staff, and remaining players through this incredibly difficult time. They reminded everyone that these young athletes were “more than hockey players – they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home.” Their loss leaves an undeniable void, not just in the world of hockey, but in the hearts of all who knew them. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this profound tragedy.
