The Hastings community is mourning the loss of a truly exceptional man, Andy Winitana, who tragically passed away last Tuesday after an assault in Ahuriri. But more than the circumstances of his death, people are remembering Andy as a “colossus” – not just in stature, but in spirit and kindness.
Known to his family as their “beautiful humble gentle giant,” Andy, 46, was a successful businessman, leading iScaffold Aotearoa and Whakamana Ltd. Yet, his incredible heart extended far beyond his professional life. He was a dedicated volunteer, a “kaiwhakamana” who regularly visited Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison, helping inmates gain valuable building qualifications. He also tirelessly assisted in the post-Cyclone Gabrielle clean-up efforts, always putting others first.
Hastings district councillor Henare O’Keefe shared a powerful story that perfectly captures Andy’s character: he once spontaneously offered a job to a soon-to-be-released prisoner – a complete stranger – demonstrating an extraordinary leap of faith and compassion. “He was one of those people who would literally give you the shirt off their backs,” O’Keefe said, calling him “the glue” that holds a community together.
Surrounded by his loving whānau, waiata, and karakia, Andy was taken off life support, leaving behind a legacy of profound generosity and care. O’Keefe urges the community to honor Andy’s memory not with anger, but by being good, kind, and caring people. As they say, they didn’t call him “Handy Andy” for nothing. His spirit of selflessness will undoubtedly inspire us all.
