In a surprising and urgent plea, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has declared that only former President Donald Trump possesses the unique ability to bring Ukrainian and Russian leaders to the table for a final peace talk. As Russia continues its relentless drone strikes, Ukraine feels an immense pressure to accelerate peace efforts, fearing America’s attention might wane with upcoming elections.
Sybiha believes Trump’s singular influence is key to resolving the conflict, which is nearing its fifth year. The biggest sticking points remain Russia’s demands for crucial territories like the Donetsk region and Europe’s largest nuclear facility, Zaporizhzhia. These “most sensitive” issues demand direct talks between President Zelensky and President Putin, but Putin has repeatedly declined such a meeting. Trump himself has reportedly given both nations until June to end the war.
Despite these significant hurdles, there’s a flicker of hope. Sybiha notes momentum from recent talks in Abu Dhabi, which successfully restarted prisoner exchanges. Ukraine is “ready to speed up” these peace efforts. Yet, this optimism is constantly overshadowed by devastating reality: Russia recently launched 101 drones in a single night, hitting critical infrastructure and residential areas.
President Zelensky condemned these “brutal” attacks, urging the world not to “turn a blind eye.” Until a ceasefire is secured, Ukraine is determined to make the war financially “untenable” for Russia, continuing to target its economy. The world watches, waiting to see if a diplomatic breakthrough can truly emerge amidst the ongoing conflict.
