The tragic death of 22-year-old Elyse Foster, known affectionately as the “Queen of Snapchat” for her vibrant online presence, has left her family heartbroken and searching for answers. Elyse, a “bright and beautiful” young woman battling rare cancer (thymoma) and an autoimmune condition (myasthenia gravis), passed away after a sudden cardiac arrest while recovering in Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Elyse had undergone surgery and was in critical care. On October 7, shortly after her mother had left and her observations were normal, she suffered an unwitnessed cardiac arrest. Vomit was later found in her mouth. Although doctors managed to restart her heart, tests revealed severe brain damage, and her life support was switched off ten days later.
Her grief-stricken family firmly believes more could have been done. They argue that Elyse, who was training to be a children’s nurse, should not have been fed orally – her first time in two weeks – without constant supervision or a speech and language assessment. They suspect she vomited and choked while alone. “If someone had been there,” her mother and grandmother stated, “she would still be alive now.” They are advocating for policy changes and accountability.
Despite the family’s concerns, an inquest concluded that Elyse died from “natural causes.” The coroner stated that while the exact cause of the cardiac arrest was unknown, all potential causes (like vomiting, arrhythmia, or lack of oxygen) are considered natural.
For Elyse’s family, the questions linger. They continue to mourn their “precious” daughter, hoping her story will lead to improvements in patient care.
