Cyprus, a popular tourist destination, is currently experiencing heightened alert as residents in three communities near Paphos have been advised to stay indoors. This precautionary measure comes amid fears of retaliatory attacks linked to ongoing regional tensions involving Iran and its proxies.
Specifically, the communities of Timi, Acheleia, and Mandria in southwest Cyprus are under “home confinement” instructions from local authorities. This follows a concerning drone incident near the UK’s RAF Akrotiri base earlier this week. Although Paphos International Airport has since resumed normal operations, it was temporarily evacuated after an unmanned drone struck the area, leading to dozens of flight cancellations. Two more drones heading towards the base were also intercepted.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has been quick to reassure the public, stressing that the island nation is not participating in, nor intends to join, any military operations. However, the UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice, urging British nationals in the region to take “sensible precautions” due to the “heightened risk of regional tensions.” Families of British service personnel were also relocated from Akrotiri as a precaution, though officials confirmed no casualties and minimal damage to the base.
For now, safety remains the priority, with local schools assisting pupils and parents to return home safely. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the wider geopolitical landscape continues to evolve.
