Trump to UK: “We Don’t Need You Anymore!” The Special Relationship Under Strain

Former US President Donald Trump has reignited a fiery transatlantic feud, sharply criticizing UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and declaring America no longer needs British aircraft carriers. In a series of social media posts, Trump branded the UK “our once great ally” but scoffed, “We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!”

The core of Trump’s frustration seems to be Starmer’s initial reluctance to allow US forces to use UK bases for military action against Iran. While some access to bases like Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford has since been granted for defensive missions, the damage to the “Special Relationship” appears significant. Trump previously lamented that the bond was “not what it used to be,” even calling Starmer “very disappointing” and remarking, “he’s not Winston Churchill.”

Starmer, for his part, has advocated for de-escalation and negotiation with Iran. However, Trump has insisted the US should “certainly count on” Britain for support, expressing surprise at Starmer’s stance.

Beyond the immediate conflict in the Middle East, another point of tension stems from Starmer’s deal to hand over the Chagos Islands. Trump believes this move jeopardized crucial US access to an Indian Ocean airbase, further straining ties.

Despite the political friction, both nations are actively deploying military assets to the Middle East. The UK’s HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier is on high alert, and US bombers have arrived at RAF Fairford. This ongoing military presence underscores the volatile situation, even as political leaders exchange barbs across the Atlantic. The future of the “Special Relationship” remains very much in question.
