Caught in the Crossfire: Indians in the Russia-Ukraine War

It’s a stark and somber reality: over 200 Indian nationals have been drawn into the brutal Russia-Ukraine conflict, fighting on the Russian side. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently confirmed this shocking figure, revealing the complexities and dangers facing its citizens abroad.

Since the war began, 202 Indians are believed to have joined the Russian armed forces. While the situation is deeply concerning, the MEA has been actively working to bring them home, successfully securing the discharge of 119 individuals so far. However, the human cost is tragic: 26 Indian nationals have reportedly lost their lives, with 7 others missing. Efforts are ongoing to secure the discharge of another 50 and recover the remains of 10 who perished.

The Indian government is not taking this lightly. Through continuous engagement with Russian authorities at various levels, including top leaders, ministers, and officials, India is pushing for the safety, well-being, and early return of all its citizens. To aid in identifying the deceased and missing, DNA samples of 18 individuals have been shared with Russian counterparts.

This situation highlights a troubling aspect of the conflict: Russia’s extensive recruitment drive, reportedly reaching out to citizens in 128 countries to bolster its ranks. The war, which has raged for nearly four years, has led to immense devastation and a staggering human toll, with estimates suggesting over a million lives lost and millions more wounded.

As the conflict grinds on, India’s commitment remains clear: to protect its nationals and ensure their safe return from a war they never should have been part of. The government assures that all channels are being utilized to bring these citizens back to their families.
