Christmas Eve Saves the Day for Retailers!

The UK high streets and retail parks buzzed with activity on Christmas Eve as last-minute gift-buyers gave retailers a much-needed shot in the arm. Despite a challenging year for businesses, shoppers turned out in force, providing a welcome boost to the retail sector right before the holidays.

Early data revealed that footfall on Christmas Eve was up by a healthy 2.4% compared to the same day last year. Even more impressively, it soared by 20.5% compared to the week before, showing just how many Britons left their present-buying until the very last moment!

Retail parks were the standout performers, seeing a significant 6.6% rise in visitors year-on-year, and a huge 36.3% jump week-on-week. It seems many opted for the convenience of retail parks for those final crucial purchases. High streets and shopping centres also joined the positive trend, reporting increases of 1.1% and 1% respectively.

This late surge is a silver lining for retailers who have faced a tough year, battling rising labour costs and the prospect of higher business rates. As one retail analyst noted, “The footfall shows that people are still out and about, shopping in their towns and cities across the country,” which is encouraging news.

Regionally, Wales led the charge with a striking 7.9% increase in shopper traffic, while London also saw a solid 2.6% rise as many ventured into the capital for their final shopping spree. So, while it’s been a bumpy road, Christmas Eve proved to be a festive finale for many UK retailers, ending the year on a high note!
