The holiday season, often a time of joy, brought profound sorrow to the McCabe family from Co. Tyrone. Young Shea McCabe was tragically found in Cork city’s River Lee on December 26th, after what his family described as a “freak accident” days earlier.
Following his disappearance on December 18th, an incredible nine-day search unfolded. Gardaí, Coast Guard, firefighters, the National Ambulance Service, and dedicated search and rescue teams, including Irish Search Dogs and local sub aqua clubs, scoured the river and harbor. Even on Christmas morning, selfless volunteers continued their efforts, determined to bring Shea home and offer some comfort to his loved ones. Their perseverance paid off when Shea’s body was eventually located using specialized sonar technology.
This devastating loss is yet another heartbreak for the McCabes, who have endured the passing of Shea’s brother Jason in October 2023 and their mother just seven months later. To help bring Shea back to Pomeroy, cover funeral costs, and support his three-year-old son, Cahan, the family launched a GoFundMe appeal. They also wish to donate to the incredible Cork volunteers who tirelessly searched for Shea.
The response has been overwhelming. In just three days, nearly £9,000 was raised, a testament to the community’s immense compassion. Shea’s sister, Stacey, expressed their profound gratitude for the “incredible efforts of the rescue services” and the outpouring of support.
Locally, the Miners’ Rest pub in Coalisland shared a touching tribute, thanking everyone for their donations and remembering Shea with deep affection: “There’ll always be a forever one in the keg for you. We’ll miss you more than words could ever say.” As fundraising continues, this story highlights the profound strength and kindness that emerges when communities rally around those in their darkest hour.
