Malaysia’s PM Sounds Alarm on Venezuela Crisis

In a truly unprecedented move that has sent ripples across the globe, the United States recently announced the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, by a US military operation in Caracas. They were reportedly flown to New York to face federal charges, with US President Donald Trump declaring the US would administer Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition.”

This shocking development immediately drew a strong rebuke from Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Expressing grave concern via a Facebook post, PM Anwar unequivocally condemned the US action, labelling it a clear violation of international law and an unlawful use of force against a sovereign state.

The Prime Minister didn’t mince words, demanding the immediate release of Maduro and his wife. He warned that forcibly removing a sitting head of government through external intervention sets a perilous precedent, undermining the very framework of international law and eroding fundamental restraints on power between nations.

“It is for the people of Venezuela to determine their own political future,” Anwar stressed, echoing a core principle of international relations. He highlighted that history repeatedly shows external forces imposing leadership changes often cause more harm than good, especially in countries already struggling with economic hardships and social tensions.

Malaysia, Anwar reiterated, stands firm in upholding international law and respecting the sovereignty of nations – principles essential for peaceful global relations. Instead of unilateral force, he advocated for constructive engagement, dialogue, and de-escalation as the most credible path to protect civilians and allow Venezuelans to pursue their aspirations without further harm. This incident underscores a critical moment for international diplomacy and the future of global governance.
