Golden Globes: Glitz, Glamour, and Growing Grumbles?

Hollywood’s “booziest bash,” the Golden Globes, is rolling out the red carpet again. But this year, the usual sparkle might compete with serious behind-the-scenes drama. Amid political tensions and a major studio’s uncertain future, the vibe could be more complicated than just celebration.

Following a tough box-office year, Hollywood faces unease. Many attendees oppose current US policies, creating a palpable undercurrent of tension. Plus, the fate of iconic studio Warner Bros., potentially acquired by Netflix for a whopping $82.7 billion, looms large. This deal could reshape the industry, worrying even movie theaters worldwide.

Despite the serious backdrop, host Nikki Glaser, known for her sharp roasts, promises to keep the laughter flowing. She’s vowed to take on A-listers, even joking about “icebergs” for Leo DiCaprio. Glaser humorously noted that not everyone in the room might be tuned into the deeper geopolitical issues, setting the stage for a night that aims for entertainment over overt politics.

On the awards front, “One Battle After Another” is the undisputed frontrunner with nine nominations, dominating the musical or comedy category with its star-studded cast like Leonardo DiCaprio. Other strong drama contenders include Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” Timothee Chalamet is eyeing his first Globe, while Australia’s Rose Byrne is a favorite for “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.”

It’s also a new chapter for the Golden Globes themselves. Now under new ownership, the awards are voted on by a much larger, diverse group of about 400 people, distinct from the Academy Awards.

Tune in for a night promising the usual Hollywood spectacle, but with an intriguing mix of champagne, sharp humor, and an industry in flux.
