Rotorua’s iconic Government Gardens, a true jewel in the city’s crown and a massive draw for tourists, recently faced an unwelcome untidy moment. Long-time local resident and photographer Tracey Scott was “shocked” to discover a particular bowling green near the historic Rotorua Museum looking more like a forgotten field than a manicured lawn.
Tracey, 65, a former Rotorua Daily Post photographer, has captured the beauty of these gardens for three decades. On a visit in early January, she was dismayed to find patches of grass she described as “waist-high,” just 100 metres from the bustling Band Rotunda. “I’ve lived in Rotorua all my life and take great pride in my city,” she passionately stated, emphasizing that such an “eyesore” was “not a good look” for the countless tourists and visitors who flock to the area. She found it “totally unacceptable” for such a significant tourist attraction to be in this condition.
So, what caused this unexpected wild growth in such a prominent spot? The mystery of the overgrown green was soon clarified. It turns out this specific bowling green is leased and maintained by the Rotorua Bowling Club, separate from the council’s direct responsibilities. Brian Denny, president of the club, promptly offered sincere apologies. He explained that “bad weather experienced in early December” had unfortunately prevented their greenkeeper from carrying out the necessary maintenance as scheduled.
The good news? The issue has been swiftly addressed! A contractor has since mowed the area, restoring it to its expected pristine condition. The Rotorua Bowling Club has given assurances that they will diligently keep up with the green’s maintenance going forward, weather permitting. Meanwhile, the Rotorua Lakes Council reaffirmed that all other areas within the Government Gardens under their direct care are regularly maintained, with schedules adjusting for seasonal growth and weather conditions.
It’s a reassuring testament to local pride and prompt action that Rotorua’s stunning Government Gardens are once again shining brightly, ready to welcome visitors with beautifully maintained landscapes!
