The energy at Melbourne Park is already electric as the Australian Open qualifying rounds ignite with some incredible tennis! Local stars are making their mark alongside a Grand Slam champion on a remarkable comeback trail, all vying for a spot in the main draw.

Leading the charge for Australia, Bernard Tomic showcased impressive form, comfortably defeating Hugo Dellien of Bolivia in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Tomic looked sharp and in control, firing six aces in the opening set and breaking his opponent multiple times. He now moves on to face Great Britain’s Arthur Fery, brimming with confidence.

One of the most inspiring stories comes from former US Open winner Sloane Stephens. Ending a tough 13-match losing streak, she battled to a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Czech Barbora Palicova. This win is monumental for Stephens, marking her first major qualifying appearance since Wimbledon 2012 and signalling a strong return after a significant foot injury. What a resilient effort from a true champion!

Many other Australian players are also celebrating first-round wins. Olivia Gadecki looked powerful, dominating Aramtxa Rus 6-2, 6-4 with her commanding first serve. Tina Smith fought valiantly, winning two back-to-back tiebreakers against Cadence Brace. Wildcard entrant Lizette Cabrera was in sublime form, especially in a near-perfect second set, cruising to a 7-5, 6-0 win. In the men’s draw, Dane Sweeny secured a hard-fought three-set victory over Andrea Pellegrino.

The dream of reaching the main draw is alive for these athletes, promising more thrilling action as the Australian Open qualifiers continue!
