Imagine you’re settled in for your flight, the plane starts to taxi, and then… you hear screaming and banging from *underneath* the aircraft. That’s exactly what happened to passengers on an Air Canada Rouge flight at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on December 13th.
Flight AC1502, bound for Moncton, New Brunswick, had just begun its journey towards the runway when cries for help started echoing through the cabin. Passengers, initially confused, soon realized something was terribly wrong. Some even called authorities as flight attendants scrambled to investigate.
The astonishing truth? A baggage handler was trapped inside the plane’s cargo hold! Air Canada later confirmed the cargo doors had been “inadvertently closed” while a member of the ground crew was still inside. Luckily, the pilot, alerted to the frantic noises, quickly turned the aircraft back to the departure gates.
Passenger Gabrielle Caron recalled the flight attendants running back and forth, and ground crew gathering around the plane – a clear sign of an unfolding emergency. The pilot, in a message to passengers, expressed his shock, saying he’d “never had that in my life,” but thankfully confirmed the trapped individual was “fine and safe.”
The quick thinking of the passengers and crew led to a swift rescue, and the baggage handler was released unharmed. It was a terrifying ordeal for everyone involved, but thankfully, this incredible story has a happy ending.
