Last November, Hong Kong experienced a tragedy of unprecedented scale when a fierce blaze ripped through a housing complex. Now, the city’s security chief, Chris Tang, has confirmed the final, heartbreaking death toll: 168 lives lost. This devastating event marks the deadliest residential building fire globally since 1980, significantly higher than the initially reported 161 victims. All remains have now been identified, and every grieving family has been notified, though names will be withheld to honour their privacy.

The victims represent a poignant cross-section of society, ranging in age from a mere 6 months to 98 years old. Among the 110 women and 58 men were a dedicated firefighter, interior decorators, construction workers, and migrant domestic helpers – lives from all walks of life, tragically cut short.

The inferno at the Wang Fuk Court complex was catastrophic, engulfing seven out of eight residential towers. Early findings point to ongoing renovations and potentially substandard netting wrapping the buildings as factors that may have accelerated the fire’s terrifying spread.

In the wake of this disaster, authorities are pursuing justice with unwavering resolve. A judge-led independent committee has been established to investigate thoroughly. Police efforts have already led to 16 arrests on suspicion of manslaughter, alongside six arrests for fraud. Additionally, Hong Kong’s anti-graft watchdog has apprehended 14 individuals on suspicion of corrupt practices. As Hong Kong continues to mourn, the community stands united in its demand for answers and accountability, hoping to prevent such a catastrophe from ever happening again.
