North Canterbury is grappling with tragic news today after a serious collision on State Highway 7 (Mouse Point Road) sadly claimed the life of a motorcyclist. The heartbreaking incident occurred around noon in the Tekoa Range, Hurunui, involving a motorcycle and a car.

Emergency services, including police, fire, and two ambulance crews from Hato Hone St John, swiftly responded to the scene near the Hanmer Springs and Leslie Hills roads. Despite their immediate and dedicated efforts to save the rider, a police spokesperson confirmed that the motorcyclist died at the scene.

A witness, who arrived shortly after the crash, described a harrowing scene where a person was performing CPR on the rider. They also noted that it appeared the motorcyclist might have “overshot a sharp curve on a wet road” just before the collision. A nurse present at the scene confirmed the tragic loss.

In the aftermath, State Highway 7 between Hanmer Springs and Culverden was completely closed to traffic. The Serious Crash Unit is now meticulously investigating the circumstances of this devastating event to understand exactly what happened. Diversions are currently in place, and the public is urged to follow the directions of emergency services and NZTA contractors working at the site.

This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder for all road users about the critical importance of road safety, especially when facing challenging conditions like wet roads and sharp bends. Let’s all prioritize vigilance and drive carefully to prevent further sorrow on our roads. Our deepest sympathies go out to everyone affected by this profound loss.
