EU Eyes Terrorist Label for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard

Big news is brewing in the European Union, and it directly concerns Iran’s powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The EU is seriously considering a major move: officially adding the Guard to its list of terrorist organizations. This decision, expected to be finalized by EU foreign ministers in Brussels, would be a direct response to Iran’s severe crackdown on ongoing nationwide protests.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, didn’t mince words. She explicitly stated her expectation that foreign ministers would agree to this significant step. If approved, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard would be placed in the same category as notorious groups like al-Qaeda, Hamas, and Daesh (the Arabic acronym for ISIS). “If you act as a terrorist, you should also be treated as a terrorist,” Kallas declared, highlighting the gravity of the potential decision.

This isn’t the first time an international body has taken such a stance against the Guard; the United States previously imposed similar sanctions. While Iran hasn’t issued an immediate official comment on this specific EU development, they have been vocal in recent days, criticizing Europe for even considering such a move.

The potential designation carries immense weight. It signifies a strong condemnation from the EU regarding human rights and political freedoms in Iran. It also opens the door for further economic and political repercussions, impacting the Guard’s operations and potentially complicating international relations even further. This decision marks a significant escalation in the EU’s approach to Tehran, signaling a clear message: actions have consequences, especially when it comes to suppressing a nation’s own people.
