The Gentle Power of Horses: Healing Children in Taiwan

Imagine a place where laughter echoes and joy blossoms, all thanks to a very special kind of therapy. In Taoyuan, Taiwan, the Therapeutic Riding Center is transforming lives, one hoofbeat at a time. Here, children facing conditions like cerebral palsy, autism, and ADHD discover incredible companionship and healing through the magic of horses.

Take Chen You-ching, an 18-year-old with cerebral palsy. Her father, Hector Chen, beams recalling her first ride: “The first time she got on a horse, she was happy.” That simple happiness has blossomed into a regular source of therapy, a testament to the powerful bond between humans and these gentle giants.

It’s not just You-ching benefiting. Five-year-old Ayah, who has Angelman Syndrome, has seen remarkable changes. Her mother, Abigail Liu, shares how Ayah became “less scared about things she doesn’t know and is willing to try (new things)” after starting horse therapy. These horses aren’t just pets; they’re specially trained healers, taught to remain calm and patient through every interaction.

The connection goes beyond just riding. Sometimes, children simply need to hug a horse, listening to its steady heartbeat, finding solace in its unwavering presence. As coach Alain Chang explains, “The horse doesn’t show annoyance even if they keep talking to it.” This non-judgmental acceptance creates a safe space, a truly special experience where children can feel completely at ease.

Week after week, rain or shine, these children eagerly anticipate their time at the center. It’s a place where courage is found, fears are eased, and the rhythmic sway of a horse’s walk can unlock new possibilities. The Therapeutic Riding Center isn’t just about riding; it’s about building confidence, fostering emotional growth, and nurturing hope, all guided by the gentle power of a horse.
