Did Trump Really Stop a Nuclear War Between India and Pakistan?

Former US President Donald Trump has a unique habit: repeatedly claiming he single-handedly prevented a war, even a nuclear one, between India and Pakistan. He’s made this assertion over 90 times, stating he stopped a “raging war” and even a “nuclear war” from breaking out between the two nations.

His peacemaking claims aren’t limited to the subcontinent. During a National Prayer Breakfast, he listed several conflicts he supposedly ended, including those between Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, Israel and Iran, and Armenia and Azerbaijan. Later, on Truth Social, he doubled down, adding Russia and Ukraine to his list of averted “nuclear wars.” In the same post, he boasted about rebuilding the US military, complete with new nuclear weapons and powerful battleships.

Specifically regarding India and Pakistan, Trump first announced on social media in May last year that after a “long night” of Washington-mediated talks, both countries had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire.

However, there’s a crucial detail to consider: India’s consistent denial. The Indian government has repeatedly stated that there was no third-party intervention in their affairs or disputes with Pakistan. This directly contradicts Trump’s narrative of himself as a pivotal mediator.

So, while the former President frequently takes credit for averting a major conflict, the reality, according to India, is quite different. It leaves many wondering about the true extent of his diplomatic achievements.
