A serious incident early last Saturday morning in Hastings has left one man fighting for his life and sparked an urgent police investigation. While an alleged offender is now in custody, police are making an urgent appeal to local residents for help to gather crucial evidence.

The unsettling events began around 3:25 AM on Saturday in the Karamu Road North area. Officers were called to an address where they discovered a man with severe injuries. Police immediately administered first aid before paramedics rushed him to hospital. He underwent surgery and remains in a critical condition.

According to Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Karli Whiu, the alleged attacker fled the scene before police arrived. However, swift action followed. By 6 AM the same morning, police received information about a man hiding at a property on Mayfair Avenue, not far from where the stabbing occurred. Officers quickly located and arrested the man without further incident. He has since been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and has been remanded in custody.

Now, the focus shifts to gathering crucial evidence. Police are specifically asking residents in the surrounding areas to check their security camera footage. They are interested in any recordings from the time of the incident (around 3:25 AM Saturday) until the man’s arrest (around 6 AM Saturday). It’s vital to double-check camera time settings, including any daylight savings adjustments, to ensure the relevant period is covered.

Additionally, residents are asked to carefully inspect their properties for any items that might have been discarded by the alleged offender.

If you have any information, no matter how small, please report it via 105.police.govt.nz or by calling 105, using reference number 260207/3403. You can also share information anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 0800 555 111. Your help could be invaluable to this ongoing investigation.
