Tired of seeing mattresses, old beds, and bags of rubbish dumped illegally, Coventry City Council has launched a unique and very public campaign to shame fly-tippers. They’re posting CCTV footage of these “grubby deeds” on a dedicated ‘Wall of Shame’, complete with scathing and often witty voiceovers!
Imagine trying to secretly ditch your unwanted items, only to have your actions broadcast for everyone to see. That’s exactly what’s happening to serial offenders in Coventry. One clip shows a woman casually dumping two overflowing bin bags behind a car, only to notice the camera and move them into clear view – a strange move indeed, as the narrator points out! The same woman even appears in another video, seemingly a repeat offender.
Another memorable moment captures a man dragging a fold-up bed across the road and discarding it in a car park. The voiceover delivers a sharp reminder: “Repeat after us, car parks are for vehicles, not beds.” We even see a woman in a dressing gown and slippers helping a man haul a mattress to the roadside, prompting the narrator to jokingly question her fashion choices and awareness of bulky waste collections. A fridge also makes an appearance, ditched behind a fence by two men.
Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council, is clear: “Fly-tipping is unacceptable, and we will use everything in our power to stop it and prosecute those responsible.” The council is appealing to the public for help, urging anyone who recognizes the offenders in these videos to get in touch.
This initiative highlights the council’s commitment to keeping Coventry a clean and fantastic place for everyone. By publicly shaming those who spoil the city, they hope to put an end to this unsightly and unhygienic problem.
