Get ready, New Zealand! A significant bout of wild weather is set to sweep across parts of the country, bringing severe gales, heavy rain, and significant travel disruptions, especially for those heading to or from Wellington.
Air New Zealand has issued a critical warning for passengers flying today or tomorrow, advising them to expect delays or even cancellations. Wellington is bracing for severe wind gusts, potentially reaching a powerful 130km/h from this evening through tomorrow afternoon. Adding to the challenge, ongoing upgrades at Wellington Airport, combined with low visibility, are expected to further complicate flight operations. Air New Zealand’s Chief Operating Officer Alex Marren emphasized that safety remains the top priority, with teams working hard to rebook affected customers.
But it’s not just Wellington feeling the brunt. The wild weather system is widespread. Heavy rain is forecast for Gisborne, Tairāwhiti, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, inland Manawatū-Whanganui, and parts of northern Canterbury, with some areas potentially receiving over 150mm of rain and intense downpours. Eastern regions, including Wellington and parts of Marlborough, will also experience damaging gales, large waves, and dangerous sea conditions, with coastal inundation a real possibility.
MetService is urging everyone to stay vigilant. Streams and rivers could rise rapidly, leading to surface flooding, slips, and hazardous driving conditions. It’s crucial to keep an eye on the latest forecasts as warnings could be upgraded. If you have travel plans or live in an affected area, stay informed and prioritize your safety.
