Amidst Ukraine’s harsh winter, marked by repeated power and heating cuts, a French volunteer named Loic Nervi is making a remarkable difference. Known as a “baker without borders,” Loic tirelessly kneads dough and bakes hundreds of loaves of fresh bread each day from his mobile bakery truck in the Kyiv region.
The winter temperatures have plunged to as low as -20C, and Russian strikes have devastated energy infrastructure, leaving many without essential utilities. But Loic’s mission is simple: to provide nourishing, warm bread to those who need it most, especially the elderly who often lack other support. Locals eagerly line up for his daily offerings, a comforting sight in challenging times.
Working alone, powered by two generators, Loic bakes around 700 loaves daily. He crafts two types: a hearty multigrain bread packed with seeds for sustenance, and a soft, white sandwich-style bread made with milk, sugar, and eggs. Since the war began in 2022, he has distributed tens of thousands of loaves, a testament to his unwavering dedication.
Loic openly shares the personal sacrifice involved, leaving his family behind for these missions. Yet, he believes it’s crucial work. “Most French people no longer want to — they’re tired and don’t want to hear about this war anymore,” he admits. “But no, the war is still ongoing.” His commitment highlights a vital message: “If everyone only thinks about their own comfort, we won’t move forward.” His efforts are a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, compassion, and a simple loaf of bread, can bring hope.
