Rio de Janeiro isn’t just known for its vibrant carnival and stunning beaches; lately, it’s also been battling scorching summer temperatures. And while humans can grab an ice cream, what about the city’s wild residents?
Enter Rio’s BioParque zoo, where animal welfare takes center stage, especially during extreme heatwaves. To keep their furry, feathered, and scaled inhabitants cool and comfortable, the zoo staff have come up with a brilliant solution: animal-friendly popsicles and frozen treats!
This past Tuesday, as the city sweltered, jaguars, monkeys, and a host of other animals enjoyed a delicious, icy diet tailored specifically to their species. Imagine a group of playful monkeys happily munching on refreshing watermelon popsicles, handed out by their dedicated keepers. Meanwhile, a magnificent jaguar was seen expertly ‘fishing’ for ground chicken popsicles from a floating tray in its water tank – a true hunt for a chilled meal!
These aren’t just tasty snacks; they serve a vital purpose. Biologist Letizia Feitoza explains that when the jaguar, for instance, retrieves its frozen chicken, it also ingests water, which is crucial for staying hydrated in the intense heat. Every treat is carefully prepared, with some animals enjoying frozen fruit and others receiving mixes designed to meet their unique dietary needs while offering a much-needed cool down.
It’s a wonderful example of innovative animal care, showing how zoos go above and beyond to ensure their residents are healthy and happy, even when the thermometer soars!
