A profound sorrow has enveloped the communities of Derry and Donegal after a tragic road collision claimed the lives of two 18-year-olds, Daniel Cullen and Caoimhin Porter. The young men, both from the Shantallow area of Derry, died following a devastating crash involving their car and a lorry in St Johnston, Co Donegal, on Tuesday night.

The incident, which occurred on the R236 road as the teenagers were returning home from Strabane, has left an entire region in shock. A third 18-year-old, the car’s driver, suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, with prayers and well wishes pouring in for his recovery.

Local clergy and community leaders have expressed the overwhelming grief felt by everyone. Fr. Damien Nejad, who attended the scene, described the atmosphere as “very, very sad,” while Fr. Michael Canny noted the “total shock” among the bereaved families and friends. The tight-knit community has immediately rallied, with the Shantallow Community Centre opening its Youth Wing and providing grief counsellors to offer crucial support during this unimaginable time.

Donegal County Councillor Gary Doherty called it an “absolutely devastating tragedy,” highlighting the profound impact of losing two young lives. Foyle MP Colum Eastwood echoed these sentiments, promising every possible support from the people of Derry and Donegal.

GardaĆ are currently conducting a full investigation into the collision, which happened at a known accident blackspot. They are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dash-cam footage from the area between 10:45 pm and 11:45 pm on Tuesday to come forward. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of Daniel and Caoimhin, and our thoughts are with the injured young man.
