Exciting news from Kochi as Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a leader in India’s shipbuilding sector, recently held the steel-cutting ceremony for two brand-new, powerful tugboats! These vessels are being built for Polestar Maritime Limited, marking a significant step forward for India’s maritime capabilities.

The ceremony, graced by Vinit Badani from Polestar and senior CSL officials, celebrated the start of construction for these “ASTDS 70-Tonne Bollard Pull Tugs.” What does that mean? Simply put, these are incredibly strong tugboats designed to push and pull large ships, essential for port operations and safely guiding vessels.

Measuring 33 meters long, these impressive tugs will feature advanced propulsion systems with powerful 1838 kW engines and large propellers from Niigata IHI Power Systems. Their design comes from Robert Allan Limited, a globally renowned expert in harbor tug design, ensuring top-tier performance and reliability.

CSL isn’t just building any tugs; they’re setting new benchmarks. As Jose V J, CSL’s Chairman and Managing Director, highlighted, CSL is committed to quality and timely delivery. Their current order book includes 17 such advanced tugs, alongside six “green tugs.” In fact, CSL, in partnership with Polestar, is also constructing two tugs under the Government of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), actively promoting a more sustainable maritime industry.

This collaboration between CSL and Polestar is a testament to India’s growing strength in shipbuilding and its dedication to a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly future for its vital shipping sector. Get ready to see these powerful new additions making waves soon!
