Saturday night in Dubai was far from ordinary. Residents were kept awake by waves of drone attacks, reportedly from Iran, targeting several key locations across the UAE. The iconic Burj Al Arab hotel and Dubai International Airport (DXB) were among the sites affected, sparking concern but ultimately leading to minimal damage and few injuries thanks to swift responses.
Official statements confirmed that drone shrapnel caused a fire at the Burj Al Arab, which was quickly extinguished with no injuries reported. Similarly, debris from air interception operations led to a fire at Jebel Ali Port, also without injuries. At Dubai International Airport, an incident caused 4 injuries, with emergency teams activated immediately to manage the situation.
Reports also indicated attacks on Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport, tragically resulting in one confirmed death and seven injuries, though further official confirmation was awaited. The fasting month of Ramzan and the weekend meant many were already awake, making the intermittent sirens and official alerts even more unsettling.
The UAE’s Ministry of Defence showcased remarkable preparedness, intercepting a significant number of threats. They successfully destroyed 132 out of 137 ballistic missiles and 195 out of 209 drones launched towards the country, demonstrating the effectiveness of their air defense systems.
In the wake of the events, schools in Dubai and Abu Dhabi swiftly shifted to distance learning. The General Authority of Civil Aviation provided extensive support to thousands of stranded passengers, covering accommodation and rebooking costs. Despite a night of tension, Dubai and the UAE demonstrated impressive resilience and a highly coordinated response, prioritizing public safety and managing the disruption efficiently.
