Justice Served: The Iranian-Backed Plot to Kill Trump Unraveled

ivanusma70 March 7, 2026 2 minutes read

A chilling plot to assassinate former US President Donald Trump and other American politicians has been brought to light and successfully thwarted, culminating in the conviction of a Pakistani man with ties to Iran. Asif Raza Merchant, 48, was found guilty in a New York court this past Friday, facing a potential life sentence for his involvement in a scheme driven by vengeance.

Merchant, identified as a trained operative of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was sent to the United States in 2024 with a dangerous mission: to arrange political assassinations. The primary target, according to court documents, was Donald Trump, with other prominent figures like former President Joseph Biden and Ambassador Nikki Haley also considered. This elaborate plan was intended as revenge for the 2020 killing of Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, an action ordered by then-President Trump.

The plot began to unravel when Merchant contacted an acquaintance in New York, hoping to find individuals to carry out the killings. Unbeknownst to him, this acquaintance became a confidential source for law enforcement. Soon after, Merchant met with purported hitmen – who were, in reality, undercover US officers. He laid out his requests, which included not just an assassination, but also the theft of documents and arranging protests.

In June 2024, believing he was moving forward with the scheme, Merchant paid a $5,000 advance to the undercover officers. However, before he could leave the country as planned in July, American law enforcement swooped in and arrested him.

US Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated, “This man landed on American soil hoping to kill President Trump — instead, he was met with the might of American law enforcement.” The FBI echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the resolute commitment to protect the homeland from such “craven efforts to wage terror.” Merchant’s conviction for murder for hire and attempting an act of terrorism serves as a powerful testament to the vigilance of US authorities in safeguarding national security.
