Sun Shines, Planes Pause: The A320 Software Update Explained

Ever wonder what could unexpectedly ground a fleet of planes? It’s not just mechanical issues; sometimes, even the sun plays a part! Recently, a surprising revelation from Airbus has led to urgent software updates for its popular A320 family of aircraft, including those flown by Air New Zealand and Jetstar.

The issue? Intense solar radiation was found to have the potential to corrupt vital flight control data, a discovery made after a recent incident involving an A320 family plane. While this sounds serious, it’s crucial to understand that airlines like Air New Zealand are implementing these changes as a **precautionary measure**, not due to an immediate safety threat.

Initially, Air New Zealand announced all its A320neo aircraft would need the update before their next flight, leading to twelve immediate cancellations. However, to minimize disruption for passengers, the airline quickly revised its stance. Following new advice from the European Union Aviation Safety Authority (EASA), A320 flights without the update were allowed to continue operating until just before 1 pm on Sunday, November 30th (New Zealand time). This temporary reprieve allowed many aircraft to reach their destinations, preventing further chaos.

Air New Zealand is now working swiftly to roll out the necessary software updates across its A320 fleet, which commonly operates routes to Australia and the Pacific Islands. Jetstar has also experienced some cancellations and is working to re-accommodate affected travellers.

Airbus has apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing that safety remains its top priority. So, while your travel plans might have faced a hiccup due to the sun’s influence, rest assured that these measures are all about keeping you safe in the skies.
