In the southeastern city of Iranshahr, four individuals have lost their lives and five more have been poisoned after consuming dangerous homemade spirits. Two of the victims remain in intensive care, fighting for their lives.
Iranian police have acted swiftly, identifying and arresting three alleged distributors believed to be responsible for selling the fatal concoction. This grim event highlights a recurring and deadly issue stemming from a national ban.
Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, the sale and consumption of alcohol have been strictly forbidden in Iran. This prohibition, however, has inadvertently fueled a massive underground market for alcoholic beverages, many of which are unregulated, poorly produced, and often tragically adulterated with toxic substances. Only non-Muslim minorities are exempt from the ban, provided they drink in private.
The consequences of this illicit trade are severe and far-reaching. Beyond the immediate tragedy in Iranshahr, Iran has a history of such incidents. Last year, 17 people died from contaminated bootleg alcohol, leading to the execution of four distributors involved in the trade. Even public figures face harsh penalties; a popular footballer was recently suspended for merely appearing to carry an alcoholic drink in an online video.
This latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the extreme dangers associated with consuming unregulated, illegal alcohol. When demand is pushed underground, quality control vanishes, often with lethal results. The real cost isn’t just a legal penalty; it can be life itself.
