Pope Leo XIV has embarked on his first international journey since becoming pontiff in May, making a significant stop in Beirut, Lebanon, after departing from Türkiye. His arrival on Sunday was met with immense enthusiasm and a grand welcome, reflecting the profound hope his presence brings to a nation grappling with multiple crises.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi greeted the Pope at Rafik Hariri International Airport. Beyond the official welcome, thousands of well-wishers lined the roads from the airport to the presidential palace, eager to catch a glimpse of the Holy Father. Lebanese Information Minister Paul Morcos highlighted the importance of the visit, noting it brings “great hope to a people struggling with crises,” with over a thousand journalists covering the historic event.
The three-day visit is packed with engagements designed to foster dialogue, faith, and solidarity. Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to meet with political leaders, civil society groups, and diplomats. A deeply spiritual journey awaits him as he visits the Mar Charbel monastery in Annaya to pray at the Shrine of Saint Charbel, and later meets bishops and clergy at the Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in Harissa.
A powerful message of unity will be delivered during an interfaith and ecumenical gathering in Martyrs’ Square, followed by a heartfelt meeting with young people. The Pope will also offer comfort and support during a visit to medical staff and patients at the Sisters of the Cross Hospital, and hold a silent prayer at the site of the devastating Beirut port blast.
Concluding his impactful visit, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate a large Mass on Beirut’s waterfront, leaving a lasting message of peace and resilience for the Lebanese people before his official farewell. This visit truly represents a beacon of hope, reminding Lebanon that it is not forgotten.
