Trump’s Bold AI Play: Why He Wants One Rulebook for America’s Tech Future

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our world, promising revolutionary changes across industries, the economy, and even military technology. As nations race to lead this powerful technological wave, the question of how to best regulate AI has become a hot-button issue in the United States.

President Donald Trump recently made a decisive announcement: he intends to issue an executive order that would effectively strip individual states of their right to regulate the surging AI industry. His reasoning? To ensure the US maintains its dominance in the global AI race, he believes there must be “only One Rulebook” for the entire country. On his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that allowing 50 different state-level regulations, some from what he called “bad actors,” would inevitably “destroy AI in its infancy,” crippling America’s ability to innovate and compete on the world stage.

This isn’t a new conversation. The idea of centralizing AI regulation has faced considerable resistance in Washington. Congress has already twice declined to vote for measures that would override state-level AI laws. Lawmakers across the aisle, including many Democrats and some Republicans, express deep skepticism and concern about AI’s rapid advancements, fearing potential economic disruptions and social harms if the technology isn’t carefully overseen.

Despite this pushback and the congressional rejections, Trump is signaling his intent to move forward with a “ONE RULE Executive Order” this week. He frames it as a critical step to ensure the US remains unchallenged in the AI domain. However, this bold move is widely expected to stir significant political opposition and trigger a wave of legal challenges, setting the stage for a dramatic battle over the future of AI governance in America.
